Immigration issues controlling upcoming elections?

It seems that Arizona's new immigration law is becoming a huge issue in the upcoming elections. People are deciding who they want in power by where they stand in the immigration debate, which is happening all over the country. The new law gives police a right to arrest people they have suspicions about being an illegal immigrant who can not provide evidence that they are a legal citizen. This makes it a very controversial issue. I think it promotes racial profiling and discrimination. Saying that, I can also see the high unemployment rate while illegal immigrants are working all over the country. My uncle works in the housing industry and he can not make decent wages seeing as illegal immigrants will work for cheaper. Then again, many Americans will be arrested just because of their race. There are a number of states that have decided to back Arizona's law and a number of officials fighting against the new law. This article from USA Today talks about the idea of making illegal immigrants already living in the states able to become American citizens. To me this seems reasonable. After living and working somewhere for years, the place becomes your home, citizenship or not. If the government were to grant citizenship to the immigrants in the country they could work for normal wages and have proper insurance. The Arizona immigration debate is huge right now in the US government and will have an influence on who is in congress and governors office in the upcoming elections.
